Worth knowing

Things to think about first.

Porcelain or natural stone?

Porcelain gives a uniform, contemporary look and is easy to keep clean. Because it absorbs almost no water, it needs a bedding method suited to porcelain. Natural stone varies slab to slab, which many people like for a softer, traditional finish.

Levels against the house

Patios are normally set below the house's damp-proof course, often by at least 150 mm, with a gentle fall away from the walls so rain runs off.

Seeing it in daylight

Natural stone and porcelain both look different on screen. The planner is a guide to layout and tone, and physical samples are worth seeing before ordering.

Should I choose porcelain or sandstone for my patio?

Porcelain suits a clean, modern look with consistent colour and easy upkeep. Sandstone suits a natural, varied finish. Both can work well, and samples help you decide.

How is a patio kept from holding water?

A patio is laid with a gentle fall away from the house and set below the damp-proof course, so rainwater runs off rather than pooling against the walls.

Can a patio include steps and a path?

Yes. Paths and steps linking the patio to the rest of the garden can be laid in the same or a contrasting material.

Can I preview patio layouts?

Yes. The homepage planner draws porcelain, sandstone and limestone patios to scale in each layout and colour, next to a house with bifold doors and a table for scale.
