Options

Materials, colours and layouts.

Herringbone interlocks in two directions, so it is the usual choice where cars turn and brake. Stretcher bond and basketweave suit paths and patios.

  • 90° herringbone
  • Stretcher bond
  • Basketweave

Colours

Blocks vary slightly from batch to batch, so physical samples are worth seeing in daylight before you decide.

  • Brindle
  • Buff
  • Burnt red
  • Silver grey
  • Autumn mix

Edges and borders

A border frames the paving and holds the edge blocks in place.

  • Matching border
  • Charcoal border
  • Granite sett border

Colours on screen are approximate. Physical samples can be brought when the job is discussed, and suitability is confirmed on site.

Worth knowing

Things to think about first.

What's underneath decides how long it lasts

Block paving relies on a compacted sub-base, a sand laying course and firm edge restraints. How deep the build-up needs to be depends on the ground and on whether vehicles will use it, which is why it is assessed on site.

Front gardens and planning

In England, paving more than 5 m² of a front garden with a surface that water can't soak through normally needs planning permission, unless the water drains to a lawn, border or soakaway. Permeable block paving is one way to stay within the rules. The Planning Portal has the current guidance.

Getting onto the road

If a new driveway needs a dropped kerb, that is approved and arranged through the local council, so it's worth checking before work is planned.

Questions

Block paving: common questions.

Anything else? Call 07309 765719. Enquiries are welcome seven days a week.

Which block paving pattern is best for a driveway?

Herringbone, at 45° or 90°, is the usual choice for driveways because the blocks interlock in both directions and resist movement where cars turn. Stretcher bond and basketweave are often used for paths and patios.

Can block paving be laid in different colours?

Yes. Common colours include charcoal, brindle, buff, burnt red, silver grey and autumn mix, and a contrasting border can frame the main area. Physical samples can be brought when the job is discussed.

Do I need planning permission to block pave my front garden?

In England you normally need permission to cover more than 5 m² of a front garden with an impermeable surface that doesn't drain to a lawn, border or soakaway. Permeable paving or a suitable drainage route usually avoids this. Check the Planning Portal or your council for your property.

Can you clean and re-sand old block paving?

Yes. Existing block paving can be deep cleaned, re-sanded and sealed. See the cleaning and sealing page for details.
