Worth knowing

Things to think about first.

Size it around the car

A typical family car is about 1.8 m wide and 4.4 m long, before you allow room to open doors and walk past. The planner draws your measurements to scale with a car on the drive, so you can see how it fits.

Falls and drainage

A driveway should fall away from the house so water doesn't sit against walls or doorways. In England, more than 5 m² of impermeable paving in a front garden normally needs planning permission unless it drains to a lawn, border or soakaway.

Dropped kerbs

A new or wider entrance onto the road may need a dropped kerb, which is approved through the local council.

Questions

Driveways: common questions.

Anything else? Call 07309 765719. Enquiries are welcome seven days a week.

Does a new driveway need planning permission?

Not usually, if the surface is permeable or drains to a lawn, border or soakaway. In England, covering more than 5 m² of a front garden with an impermeable surface that drains onto the road normally needs permission. A dropped kerb is a separate council approval.

Can you extend my existing driveway?

Yes. Driveway extensions and layout changes are part of the service, with the new area matched or deliberately contrasted with what is already there.

Which materials can I choose for a driveway?

Block paving is the most common choice. Porcelain, sandstone, limestone and granite setts can also be used where the product and construction suit vehicle use, which is confirmed during the site visit.

Can I see what my driveway will look like first?

Yes. The planner on the homepage draws your chosen material, layout, colour and border to scale at your measurements, with a car for scale. It is an indicative guide, and physical samples are shown before work starts.
